A gas or propane fire pit extends your evenings on the patio, but the right model depends on three decisions: the fuel, the format and the location. Which Types of Fire Pits Should You Choose?
A fire table builds the burner into a table: you can set drinks on it, sit around it, and it becomes the focal point of the outdoor lounge. A fire bowl, lower and more sculptural, sits at the center of a group of chairs. Both come in square, round or rectangular versions.
The choice comes down to use rather than style: a fire table suits evenings with a crowd, a fire bowl suits more intimate corners. Outdoor Fire Pit: Propane, Natural Gas or Wood?
A propane outdoor fire pit is the most flexible: it runs on a tank and can be moved to suit your layout. A natural gas fire pit connects to your home’s gas line, which means no refills, but it is fixed and must be installed by a qualified professional. A wood-burning fire offers the classic ambiance, with smoke, sparks and ash to clean up, and it is often more strictly regulated by municipal bylaws. Propane Fire Pits: Shapes, Sizes and Heights
Our outdoor fire tables come in several sizes and three shapes: square, round or rectangular. Height matters as much as surface area. Conversation height, just slightly higher than a coffee table, suits lounge sets. Dining height lets you eat around the fire, as long as you plan for suitable chairs. Leave enough clearance around the unit to walk and sit comfortably, and check the clearances required by the manufacturer.
The gas and propane fire tables from our suppliers come in round formats from 42 in (107 cm) to 60 in (152 cm) in diameter, square formats of 42 in (107 cm) and rectangular formats ranging from 36 × 54 in (91 × 137 cm) to 70 × 60 in (178 × 152 cm). Conversation height is around 23 to 26 in (58 to 66 cm). Depending on the collection, you can also choose dining height (about 28 in, 71 cm), counter height or bar height (up to 40 in, 102 cm). Some models include a drawer for a standard 20 lb propane tank.
Safe Installation of a Gas Fire Table
A gas or propane fire table is for outdoor use only, in an open, well-ventilated space. Manufacturers require clearances from walls, awnings and combustible materials, and some models must not be placed directly on a flammable surface: always follow the manufacturer’s manual.

Maintenance and Protection of a Propane Fire Pit
Routine maintenance comes down to keeping the burner clean, checking the connections before the season and cleaning the top with a non-abrasive product. Before winter, shut off the gas supply, disconnect the tank and protect the unit with a protective cover so it spends the cold season safe from moisture.

What Size Propane Tank Does an Outdoor Fire Pit Need?

Do You Need a Permit or an Installer for a Gas Outdoor Fire Pit?
A standalone propane model generally does not require installation, but a natural gas connection must be made by a qualified installer. Also check the bylaws in your municipality.
Can You Install a Gas Outdoor Fire Pit on a Wood Deck?
It depends on the model. Some manufacturers prohibit use on a combustible surface without adequate protection. Check the appliance manual and ask our specialists for advice before you buy.
Which Height Should You Choose: Conversation or Dining?
Conversation height suits a lounge area where you sit in low chairs. Dining height suits you if you want to eat around the fire, with regular table chairs.
How Do You Protect an Propane Fire Pit in Winter in Quebec?
Shut off the gas supply, disconnect the tank and store it outdoors, then cover the fire pit with a cover designed for outdoor use. Before covering it, let the burner cool, clear away debris and check that the supply hose is in good condition. A propane tank should never be stored indoors, even when empty.
